Greenpeace and Search Engine Optimization (SEO)

Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is a necessity in this day and age where individuals use search engines to look for everything. From “Closest Petrol Station” to “Daily News” people search for everything online.

While Greenpeace is a not-for-profit organisation, they still benefit from the use of SEO. Zhang and Cabage (2017) recognize the importance of optimizing organic search results in order to generate successful online business. "Detox" Mannequins in BerlinA strategy run by Greenpeace attempted to use SEO in order to bring awareness to the word “Detox” and the prospective campaign. They asked bloggers to tag the word “Detox” and provide links in their posts in order to increase organic search results for their campaign. The “Detox” campaign, originally started in 2011, challenged unsustainable consumption and pollution of waterways by textile manufacturers. Since the introduction of the campaign the manufactures committed to cut hazardous chemicals have shown significant progress.

Seven years later, reports show that 80 companies have adhered to the campaign. That is 15% of global clothing production committing to the cause. Although there is still another 85% left to go, can the ever developing Digital Marketing techniques help to breathe a new life into the campaign?

  1. I think this was a very clear use of SEO to promote a campaign and ultimately creating a movement. Greenpeace made themselves known in the online space from SEO and the online conversations that were generated, successfully spread their social messages and made companies to join their movement.
